Your fostering journey

From first question to first welcome.

The journey usually takes around four to six months. Every stage has a clear purpose and a person beside you to explain what happens next.

The complete process

Seven chapters, taken at your pace.

  1. 01

    Initial consultation

A relaxed call with a fostering adviser to answer questions and understand your circumstances.

  2. 02

    Home visit

A longer conversation at home—or by video where appropriate—about fostering and family life.

  3. 03

    Application

The formal starting point once both you and the agency feel ready to continue.

  4. 04

    Checks and references

DBS, local authority, medical, home and reference checks build the safeguarding picture.

  5. 05

    Personal assessment

Your social worker explores your experiences, relationships, identity, resilience and support network.

  6. 06

    Training and panel

Preparation training supports your learning before panel considers the completed assessment.

  7. 07

    Approval and matching

The decision-maker confirms approval, then the team begins careful, informed matching.

A two-way decision

You are assessing us too.

Use each stage to ask direct questions about children’s needs, the support offered, training, allowances and what fostering could mean for your household. Good preparation depends on honest information from both sides.

If you need time, say so. The aim is a durable decision that works for you, your family and the children who may one day share your home.

Your first step is not a commitment to foster. It is simply a conversation about what might be possible.
