Enhanced DBS
Disclosure and Barring Service checks are completed for adults in the fostering household and, where relevant, regular visitors.
Background checks
Checks and references are a normal part of every fostering assessment. They protect children and help the team understand how to support your household well.
What is checked
Your assessing social worker explains what is needed, obtains consent and gives you space to discuss any concern openly.
Disclosure and Barring Service checks are completed for adults in the fostering household and, where relevant, regular visitors.
Checks explore previous contact with children’s services and any information relevant to safe care.
Your GP comments on health and whether any condition could affect your ability to foster. A diagnosis alone does not automatically exclude you.
The home is reviewed for practical safety, including alarms, windows, storage, gardens and sleeping arrangements.
Pets are considered individually for temperament, care, safety and how they may respond to a child.
Personal, family, employment and relevant previous-partner references help provide a balanced view of your experiences and relationships.
Openness matters
Many applicants worry that an old difficulty, health condition or complicated relationship history will prevent them from fostering. The most helpful approach is to discuss it early and honestly.
Information is considered in context: what happened, how it was managed, what you learned and what it means for a child today. The assessment team will explain whether further information is required.
Checks and references
Yes. All adults living in the fostering household are part of the assessment and complete relevant checks.
Not automatically. The assessment looks at how a condition is managed and whether it affects your capacity to meet a child’s needs.
Where relevant, a previous partner can provide information about relationships, parenting or a significant period of your life. Your assessor will explain what applies to you.
