Starting requirements

What you need before applying.

You should be over 21, able to live and work in the UK, and have a spare bedroom that can be dedicated to a child. You will also need sufficient time and flexibility for the child, meetings, training and unexpected events.

The team looks at the whole picture: your health, relationships, home, finances, support network, experiences and motivation. A medical condition, being single, renting or working does not automatically rule you out.

Common first questions

Before you take the next step.

Do I need childcare experience?

No. Relevant experience is helpful, but your life skills, values and capacity to learn are considered too. Training begins before approval and continues throughout your fostering career.

Can I work while fostering?

Sometimes. It depends on your household, working pattern and the needs of the child. Flexible arrangements are often important.

Do I need to own my home?

No. Renters can foster with the landlord’s permission, provided the home is stable, safe and has a spare bedroom.

Does applying commit me to foster?

No. Early conversations and the home visit help both you and the agency decide whether to continue.
