Most people who contact us have already talked themselves out of fostering at least once. The reasons are usually practical, and most of them are not barriers at all. These are the five questions we hear most often.
Do I need to own my home?
No. Renters can foster with their landlord’s permission, as long as the home is stable, safe and has a spare bedroom that can be dedicated to a child. What matters is the security of the home, not who holds the deeds.
Can I foster if I am single?
Yes. Single people, couples, parents and people without children all foster. Your support network and your capacity to give a child time and attention are what the assessment looks at.
Can I keep working?
Sometimes. It depends on your household, your working pattern and the needs of the child placed with you. Flexible arrangements are often important, so talk it through with us early and honestly.
Do I need childcare experience?
No. Relevant experience helps, but your life skills, values and willingness to learn are considered too. Preparation training begins before approval and continues throughout your fostering career.
Is there an age limit?
You need to be over 21 and have the legal right to live and work in the UK. There is no upper age limit; health, energy and the ability to meet a child’s needs are assessed individually.
If you recognise yourself in any of these questions, a first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Ask us anything.
